Get the big picture on AI.
This course is designed for students who are curious about artificial intelligence and want a deeper understanding of how modern AI systems work. The class blends clear, concept-first instruction with guided, hands-on exploration so students build confidence as they experiment and analyze real model behavior. Lessons encourage discussion, critical thinking, and structured problem solving as students explore the past, present, and emerging future of AI.
Students work with real machine learning models, design and test structured prompts, and investigate how AI handles tasks in vision, language, and search. They run experiments in Google Colab and on the Hugging Face Hub to compare models, uncover failure cases, and design high-level pipelines using natural-language planning. Fairfax Collegiate provides laptops for all student work.
At the end of the course, students can access their accounts and continue exploring their projects at home. They leave with a stronger understanding of how AI behaves, greater confidence working with modern tools, and a clearer sense of how to pursue more advanced computer science or AI studies.
Fairfax Collegiate will offer this course for the first time in the 2026 Summer Program, and the full course syllabus (goals, topics, and day-by-by schedule) will be posted closer to the start of the Summer Program.
