Frequently Asked Questions Fairfax Collegiate SAT Prep

Instructors are undergraduates and graduate students with experience in working with students, specifically in SAT preparation. All instructors scored in at least the 90th percentile of the SAT and are well-versed in teaching the necessary math and reading content and strategies.
Any student who has already taken Algebra I and Geometry in school is welcome to take the course. By preparing early, students can get a head-start on strengthening their weak areas before taking the SAT as juniors and seniors.
All skills that are tested on the SAT are covered, which are noted in the syllabus and course description. An equal amount of time is spent on the Reading and Writing section and the Math section.
PSAT classes are available throughout the Fairfax Collegiate Summer Program in-person. The PSAT and SAT are identical in their format and skill list, with the only difference being the difficulty level. A student could take an SAT prep course which would prepare them for the PSAT as well.

In-person learning is ideal for most students, as they can get face-to-face help from their instructor and more effectively collaborate with their peers. Many students don't know where to begin when it comes to SAT preparation, and live instruction and guidance works better than trying to study asynchronous material online.
Students who take an SAT course with us can retake it for free to review the skills. To utilize this option, please call the main office at 703-481-3080.
While students cover all of the SAT skills during class, they need to put in effort by studying outside of class as well. Students can set their own study schedules based on their commitments, but the more time a student spends practicing problems, the higher their score will increase. As part of the course, students learn which areas to focus their studying on and are given tools to make studying easier.

Registration for classes in the Fairfax Collegiate Summer Program is done by selecting a class at your preferred location and session in our Summer SAT Prep page.

Registration for year-round classes is done by selecting a session at any of the high schools in which we offer the course: Chantilly, Madison, McLean, and West Springfield.

In summer classes, students take full-length SAT tests at the beginning and end of the session, and an evaluation is sent to each family indicating the scores and instructor commentary about strengths and weaknesses, along with suggestions for continued study.

In all classes, instructors send update emails to let families know what content domains have been covered and what resources students should use for their own study at home during the week.

Fairfax Collegiate offers in-person instruction and promotes peer learning and collaboration. We have a strong local presence and over 30 years of experience preparing students for standardized testing.

Unlike large prep companies that have abandoned in-person classes in favor of online learning, Fairfax Collegiate values the in-person experience where students can collaborate with peers and get face-to-face help from their instructor. Fairfax Collegiate also adapts quickly to changes that come to the SAT, allowing students to get the most up-to-date information possible about the exam.
