Where do you attend school, and what what are you studying?
I received my B.A. in international relations from the University of Virginia in 1983, where I was inducted into the national honor society Phi Beta Kappa. I received my M.A. in linguistics from George Mason University in 1996. I also hold graduate-level certificates in Editing and Publications (Georgetown University) and Teaching English as a Second Language (George Mason University)
What sort of experience have you had in the subject you’ll be teaching this summer?
I have taught English as a Second Language at Northern Virginia Community College and George Mason University. I also taught English as a Foreign Language at Beijing Normal University in Beijing, China for seven years. I currently teach 5th and 8th grade Language Arts at the Nysmith School in Herndon, VA.
What excites you about teaching and working with students?
Helping students understand something that they didn't quite understand before and helping students make improvements in their language skills over time.
Outside of work, what are some hobbies you enjoy?
I am a member of the Board of Directors of Historic Fairfax City, Inc., the historical society for Fairfax City. I also have a blog and enjoy reading, listening to classical music, and, occasionally, composing music.
