Ellie Nystrom

Where have you attended school, and what activities were you involved in?

I attended the University of Virginia, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies with a concentration in Security and Justice. Through this program, I completed my undergraduate thesis investigating contradictory legislative responses to specific instances of geopolitical unrest.

I've also completed research abroad studying environmental science and global food systems, across the U.S., Costa Rica, Ecuador, Malawi, and Spain.

I was an intern at the UVA Morven Sustainability Lab, where I helped run the Morven Kitchen Garden, a regenerative agriculture learning lab. Through this role, I supported efforts to research and improve local food systems and regenerative agricultural practices in Central Virginia.

What has been your teaching experience outside of Fairfax Collegiate?

Most recently, I served as a research mentor to undergraduates through the UVA Asian Pacific American Leadership Training Institute for the 2024 and 2025 cohorts. Through this program, I guided students on independent research projects related to their personal and academic research interests, working towards end-of-semester final presentations of their work.

I have four years (2020-2023) of experience as an independent Latin Language and Culture tutor in Loudoun County. I have tutored Latin levels one through four, helping students greatly increase their course GPA.

I have four years of experience volunteers in Loudoun elementary schools (primarily at Belmont Station) as a teacher's assistant (2017-2020).

What excites you about teaching and working with students?

My favorite part of teaching and working with students is being able to help them work through challenges in subject matter comprehension and develop more positive relationships with and attitudes toward learning.

What are you looking forward to as a location director?

I enjoy most being able to support smooth program operations, so that the students can learn, have fun, and make the most of their time with us.

Outside of work, what are some hobbies you enjoy?

Painting, yoga, reading, and taking my dog on walks by the water.
