SUMMER PROGRAM STAFF


Summer Program instructors include area public and private school teachers as well as undergraduate and graduate students at leading universities. They have unique backgrounds and experience in their subject areas. Please read the biographies of our 2008 staff below. This page will be updated as more information becomes available.

Administration

Jennifer Nossal – Director
Jennifer Nossal earned a B.A. in Psychology from Miami University and a M.A. in Education and Human Development from The George Washington University. As a National Certified Counselor, Jennifer has provided counseling services and human resources consulting to a variety of organizations in the Washington D.C. area. Her responsibilities at Fairfax Collegiate include managing all programs, hiring staff, and assessing the needs of students. She has taught both the Math Strength Training and Essay Writing for SSAT and T.J. Exams courses in past summer programs.

Mark Terry - Location Director for Falls Church
Mark Terry is a graduate of the University of California where he studied biology, political science, and history. He has taught and served in leadership positions in the Fairfax Collegiate Summer Enrichment Program for the last ten years. During the school year, he works as a tutor for Fairfax Collegiate.

Jen Guzman - Location Director for Herndon
Jen Guzman has a diverse background of teaching experiences, from tutoring grade school aged children to teaching an undergraduate seminar in political science her senior year of college. She is currently an instructor for SCORE! Educational Centers, in Reston, VA, where she teaches reading, math, and writing.

Jen received an undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and an MBA from University of Oregon Lundquist School of Business. Besides teaching, her other career interests are entrepreneurship, specifically writing business plans for start-up companies, and working to help create microlending programs in developing nations.

She is the mother of two boys, Noah (5) and Asher (3). When she is not teaching, writing business plans or chasing around her kids, she loves to read, play sports and spend time with her husband. This is her second year working in the summer program.

Twila Johnson - Associate Location Director for Falls Church and Writing Instructor
Twila Johnson teaches English Composition, Introduction to Creative Writing, and Reading and Writing About Texts at George Mason University, where she will receive her M.F.A. in Creative Fiction Writing in May 2008. While a student at Oklahoma Baptist University, she won fiction, poetry, and acting awards before earning a B.A. in English, magna cum laude, with minors in Creative Writing and Theatre. Her short stories have appeared in Scriblerus and Alchemy, and she is currently completing her first novel, The Gospel According to Grandma Moses. An avid believer in giving students individual attention, she has applied her professional acting background towards creatively tutoring children, teens, and adults in writing across the disciplines. This is Twila’s first year with Fairfax Collegiate; in addition to serving as Associate Location Director for Falls Church, she will be teaching Creative Writing, Writing Skills, and Reading and Writing for Meaning.

Joelle Tybon - Associate Location Director for Falls Church and Writing Instructor
Joelle Tybon just finished her Masters in Literature at American University in Washington, DC. She hails from the other Washington, the Tacoma area to be exact, and earned her B.A. in English and History at a small liberal arts school in Oregon. Once she finished her B.A., Joelle spent two years teaching English in France and hopes to return again this coming fall. Among other things, Joelle has worked as a camp counselor, a French teacher, a Writing Center consultant, and a tour guide in Paris for American high school kids. Joelle plans to pursue her doctorate in English Literature or move to France. This is her second year returning to Fairfax Collegiate.

Computer Fluency, Programming, and Robotics

Mike Bradshaw
Mike Bradshaw is a rising third year Echols Scholar at the University of Virginia, majoring in Political Philosophy, Policy, and Law. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2006, where he was a member of the varsity track and cross-country teams all four years. At UVA, he is an active member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, a recreation facility supervisor, and a member of the Student Council Legislative Affairs Committee. Although this will be his first summer working with Fairfax Collegiate, previously he has worked as an instructional assistant at SCORE! Educational Centers and as an Information Technology intern.

John Burr
John Burr is a third-year undergraduate in the engineering program at the University of Virginia. He is working towards degrees in Computer Engineering and Computer Science. John graduated from Gonzaga College High School in 2006, where he was an active member of the robotics team that he helped bring to competition at MIT in 2005. A current Eagle Scout, John has assisted in \leading a Cub Scout den for five years. In his free time, John enjoys racquetball, playing the piano, and break dancing. This is his second year teaching in the summer program.

Ethan Fast
Ethan Fast is a rising Sophomore at the University of Virginia, where his primary studies include computer science. He currently maintains a small web design business, and works as a part time web assistant for the Engineering School. In past years, Ethan served as Vice-President of James Madison High School's robotics club, and was its lead programmer in the Richmond regional FIRST competition. He was also a varsity member of the school's cross-country team. In his free time, Ethan enjoys experimenting with unfamiliar programming languages, reading, and short story writing.

Jeremy Freid
Jeremy Freid is a rising junior at the University of Virginia who is an Economics major and Statistics minor. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in June 2006. A National Merit Finalist, Jeremy volunteered as a Hebrew tutor for younger students to prepare them for their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. When in high school, he played on the T.J. Varsity baseball team as a shortstop. In his free time Jeremy enjoys hanging out with friends, playing guitar, and eating. Jeremy hopes to pursue a career in Public Health Administration. In his first year with Fairfax Collegiate, Jeremy will be teaching several computing classes as well as the T.J. exam prep and exam essay writing classes.

Shayan Moosa
Shayan Moosa is a rising second-year student at the University of Virginia. He wishes to major in economics and neuroscience, and plans on becoming a physician in the future. At UVA, Shayan is involved in a wide range of activities and clubs, such as the American Medical Student Association, University Judiciary Committee, and the Indian Student Association. In addition, Shayan also spends his time volunteering at the Charlottesville Martha Jefferson Hospital and working at the UVA Law Library as a computer assistant. Shayan graduated from the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2007, where he participated and served in leadership roles in the Model UN, National Honor Society, Building a Better Community Service Organization, Cross Country, and Track and Field. Shayan also served as an elementary school math, computer skills, and reading tutor during his junior and senior years in high school. In his free time, Shayan enjoys playing the drums, composing music, and running.

Sam Oldak
Sam Oldak is a rising Sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania, in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He graduated from Walt Whitman High School, where he was the president of the robotics team. He still operates a computer consulting and web design business that he started in high school. In the past, Sam worked with Montgomery County Public School Web Services where he helped design and develop several websites. He is an Information Technology Assistant for his dorm, and an active member of Red & Blue Racing, a club that builds and races a Formula 1 style racecar against other colleges in a national competition. This is his second summer teaching with Fairfax Collegiate.

Michael Overson
Mike Overson graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. degree in computer science and mathematics where he was a teaching assistant for the Computer Science Department. In the Fall, he will return to Virginia tech to pursue a Masters degree in Mathematics Education. Before attending Virginia Tech, he attended Thomas Jefferson High School, graduating in 2004. After he got some experience with helping and instructing others in the Boy Scouts of America, he took an interest in a career in education. His interests include reading, music and band, video games, computers, and being outdoors. This is his second summer working with Fairfax Collegiate.

Dan Stalcup
Dan Stalcup is a Junior Math Education major and Computer Science minor at University of Virginia. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2006. For three summers, Dan was a teacher's aide in an introductory computer science class. He hopes to pursue a career in high school education. Dan has played the trumpet in the marching band for six years, including four years in high school and two in college. In his free time, Dan enjoys watching movies, playing sports with friends, and writing. This is his second year teaching computer and math courses with Fairfax Collegiate.

Will Stewart
Will Stewart is a second year Echols Scholar at the University of Virginia, where he is studying biology and computer science, among other disciplines. He graduated from George Mason High School in 2007, where he was valedictorian and student body president. Will loves all sports, especially lacrosse, which he played for his high school as an attackman and midfielder. Will is a new member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, spends time with UVA Presbyterian Student Fellowship, and is founder and president of UVA's Harry Potter Appreciation Society. Board games, movies, and keeping up with current events occupy the rest of Will's free time.

Gregg Tabot
Gregg Tabot is a Senior at Virginia Tech who is working on a computer science major and a mathematics minor. Gregg graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology as a member of the nationally ranked class of 2006. Although this is his first summer working with Fairfax Collegiate, it is not his first teaching experience. Gregg has served as a teaching assistant to rising 6-8 grade students in QUEST, a minority enrichment program offered by Fairfax County Public Schools. He has also been an undergraduate teaching assistant for intro level courses at Virginia Tech. Outside of school Gregg participates in a lot of sports. He was on his high school football team for four years and also participated in soccer and track for the Colonials. He is a collegiate level intramural referee in football, basketball, softball and soccer and has also coached four seasons of youth basketball. Gregg is eagerly looking forward to his experience with Fairfax Collegiate.

Digital Arts

Jon Biddle
Jon Biddle is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Park School of Communication, where he majored in Cinema and Photography. After finishing up his undergraduate degree he moved to Los Angeles and worked for over a year and a half in the motion picture film industry. It was in Los Angeles where Jon was able to put the theoretical and technical skills he had learned at Ithaca to use and successfully worked on dozens of commercials, music videos and feature films as a production assistant, film loader, and camera assistant.

Jon also gained shooting experience on several reality TV shows, and has worked as cinematographer on several short films, including the award winning “1309”. A music lover and enthusiast, he has shot, edited and directed many music videos, including one that received air time on MTV2. In the Summer of 2007, Jon moved to Washington, DC to obtain his M.F.A. in Film and Electronic Media at American University’s School of Communication.

Eric Hamp
Eric Hamp graduated from Virginia Tech in the summer of 2008 with a Liberal Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with minors in Business Leadership, Medicine and Society, and Sociology. After graduation, he spent four weeks in London studying Politics and eight weeks interning with Buccellati. Eric loves working with kids and has previously worked at Chesterbrook Academy in Sterling. In his free time, he enjoys reading, biking, playing sports, and watching Hokie football!

Danny Ledonne
Danny Ledonne is a graduate of Emerson College's film program in Boston. Danny's interest in wildlife filmmaking fostered the production of "Wild Animals, Domesticated Humans: The Zoo and Modern Society." The film explores the purposes and challenges of zoological parks; it is distributed on DVD through the National Film Network. Prior to this, Danny won awards in extemporaneous speaking, acting, and original oratory events. He has starred in several college theater productions while still in high school.

Danny has served as key grip, gaffer, 1st AC, and cinematographer on dozens of student and independent films and music videos in the New England area. Danny held office as the 2003-2004 president of Frames Per Second—a co-curricular film production organization at Emerson. The group was named the college's Organization of the Year. Danny has worked as director of photography on the award-winning short "KiskaDEE," editor for the feature-length experimental documentary "An Awakening Journey," and shot and edited a documentary in the wilderness of eastern Africa entitled "Kenya Hidaya."

A Colorado native, Danny is pursuing a career in the natural history documentary field while continuing to develop his passions for writing and multimedia. After teaching Tae Kwon Do, DJ-ing at a community radio station (KRZA 88.7FM), and working at an Intel Computer Clubhouse (assisting youth in creative media development - including work with the MIT-developed Scratch program), Danny enrolled in the MFA film and electronic media program at American University. He is the owner and operator of Emberwilde Productions and currently lives in Washington, DC.

Alex Morrison
Alex Morrison earned a B.S. in Cinema and Photography at Ithaca College with a double minor in Anthropology and Environmental Studies. As a filmmaker, Alex has worked in and out of Hollywood as a Director, Cinematographer, Editor, Still Photographer and Glidecam operator on a number of short films, fiction and non-fiction, including work in the art department on the feature film "The Island."

Alex's interests include documentary film, dramatic features, comedies, nature photography and talking about movies! His current roles include Director of Photography for a feature documentary on the DC Roller Girls, Director of Photography for a documentary on "Street Sense," and Producer for two projects featuring the reintroduction of wolves in Scotland and the punk music scene in Washington D.C.

Past experiences include those of a salesman for a major film equipment rental house; creator of an independent screening series in his hometown of Oberlin, Ohio; staffman at Camp Keewaydin; and film instructor at Oberlin College. He has also traveled extensively within the National Parks.

Alex's films have been selected twice for the Hardacre Film Festival and he was selected as one of the ten best filmmakers of the year by Ithaca College. Currently he is a graduate student at American University in the Film and Video program with plans to teach and develop his own projects in his spare time. Celeste Ward
Celeste Ward is a second year Masters of Fine Arts candidate in Film and Electronic Media at American University. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Film/Video Studies in 2002. Celeste has worked for several years as an editor and production coordinator and is currently a member of Women in Film and Video in Washington DC. Recently, she completed her first feature length screenplay and plans on pursuing a career in screenwriting after completing her degree. Returning to Fairfax Collegiate for the second year, she will be teaching both the Digital Video Projects and Photography courses this summer at the Falls Church location.

Exploring College Admissions

Michelina (Mimi) DelGizzi
Michelina (Mimi) DelGizzi has worked as a college counselor for the past two years through a federally funded non-profit organization called AmeriCorps, a program similar to the Peace Corps and Teach for America. For the past two years, she has worked closely with college admissions and financial aid officers from all over the country. An avid reader, she frequently peruses the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and other news media which focus on high education issues. Mimi started her college journey at Northern Virginia Community College, receiving her Associate of Science degree in 2004. She then transferred to the University of Virginia, where she ultimately graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Composition in 2006.

She is well aware of the ins-and-outs of college admissions processes, and is eager and excited to share advice, tips, and secrets with college-bound students! This will be her first summer teaching with Fairfax Collegiate as the “Exploring College Admissions” instructor. Mimi is also a certified fitness instructor; she enjoys running (or attempting to run) half-marathons, travelling to “non-touristy” places, and baking cakes for her baking business called “The Cakery Bakery”. She also enjoys listening to National Public Radio’s “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me!”

Math

Amy Cheng
Amy Cheng is a second year Echols Scholar in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia, where she plans to major in Chemistry and Psychology and work toward a health-related career. Amy graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2007. She was the historian and an active member of Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science (GEMS), the school’s organization devoted to mentoring and increasing the interest of Glasgow Middle School girls in the three subjects. At UVA, she tutors students through the Madison House volunteer program. Throughout high school she also volunteered in Patient Support Services at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, and she continues to volunteer there during her breaks from college. Amy took ballet and tap classes from the age of three to eighteen at Swan Ballet Dance Schools, where she participated in annual productions of The Nutcracker and the Spring Recital. She continues to pursue her love for dancing and performing as a member of the University Dance Club. Amy has previously attended many of the Fairfax Collegiate courses, and this will be her first time teaching Mathematics during the Summer Program.

Erica Harkins
Erica Harkins is pursuing a degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering as a rising sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania. She graduated from Langley High School as the Valedictorian, where she was a member of the Wind Ensemble, tutored Latin, and created original designs for the student fashion shows, and she also started a small business selling handmade jewelry. Last summer she spent a month in Philadelphia as a laboratory research assistant at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University. Erica loves to cook, and she is looking forward to her first summer teaching at Fairfax Collegiate.

Kyle Lamson
Kyle Lamson is a Sophomore in the school of Egineering at the University of Virginia. He currently is pursuing degrees in Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering. Before graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2007, Kyle tutored privately over the summer and taught math in a summer program setting. In high school, he was a member of the cross country and track teams. Currently, Kyle is a member of the Virginia Baja Race Team, a student club which builds and competes off-road race cars. Next year, he looks forward to taking on the roles of recruiting coordinator and webmaster for the team. In his spare time Kyle enjoys refereeing intramural sports and participating in sports of any kind. This is his first summer teaching with Fairfax Collegiate.

Lisa Kaiser
Lisa Kaiser will graduate from Virginia Tech in May 2008 with an Honors Scholar Diploma in Mathematics with a minor in Statistics. She is a member of the National Mathematics Honorary Society, Pi Mu Epsilon at Virginia Tech. Lisa played tennis on the Virginia Tech Women’s Club Tennis Team and was the President of the club team. Lisa hopes to purse a career in mathematics education or operations research. She has previously worked as a math tutor at Sylvan Learning Center and the Virginia Tech Math Emporium, a camp counselor at Chesterbrook Academy, and a substitute teacher for Loudoun County Public Schools. In her free time, she enjoys reading, music, crafts, sports, spending time with family, and solving Rubik’s cubes. This is her second summer teaching at the Fairfax Collegiate Summer Program. This is her second year teaching the Math courses in Falls Church and Herndon.

Stanley Liu
Stanley Liu is a rising second year undergraduate student at the University of Virginia. As a pre-med student, he is pursuing a BS in Biology, a BA in Cognitive Science, and a minor in Psychology. At UVa he is a volunteer at both the University Hospital and at the local Boys and Girls Club, where he helps local children with their schoolwork and acts as a positive role model. In 2007, he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. In high school, he was an All-District runner for the Track team and was active in Belvedere Elementary School tutoring, where he helped elementary school children with math and English. In his free time he enjoys running, playing sports, and music. Although this is his first year as a teacher at Fairfax Collegiate, he has worked as a teaching assistant for the Creative Computing and Robotics classes for the past two years. He will be teaching math and computer courses in the summer program this year.

Iram Shaikh
Iram Shaikh is a rising second year student at the University of Virginia majoring in biology. At UVA she is involved with Madison House, a student volunteer center that provides tutoring services to children. She graduated from Lake Braddock Secondary School in 2007 where she tutored students in biology and math and was co-president of the school's international show. After attending the Virginia Governor's School for Life Sciences and Medicine and interning at an Internal Medicine clinic, she has decided to follow the pre-medical path in college. In her free time Iram enjoys reading, photography, playing tennis, and relaxing with her friends. This is her second year working with Fairfax Collegiate. This is her second year teaching with Fairfax Collegiate.

Christina Sohn
Christina Sohn is a second year, Echols Scholar, at the University of Virginia. She graduated from West Springfield High School as Valedictorian in 2007. Christina has tutored for various high school honor societies, including French Honor Society, of which she became president in her senior year. She has volunteered for U.Va Hospital’s In-patient Pharmacy in association with U.Va Madison House’s Medical Services program. In 2006, she received the GWU School of Engineering and Science Medal for achievement in mathematics and science and the National Council Teachers of English Achievement Award in Writing. Her interests include reading, writing, movies, art, and math.

Kenzan Tanabe
Kenzan Tanabe is a rising second year undergraduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology majoring in mathematics with computer science. Before MIT, he attended The Potomac School, where he captained both the cross country and wrestling teams before graduating in 2007. An avid wrestler, he enjoys teaching technique to younger wrestlers, and continues to wrestle for the MIT Engineers. This will be his first year at Fairfax Collegiate, and he is very excited about teaching the math and computer science classes this summer.

Public Speaking

Kathy Bian
Kathy Bian is a third-year undergraduate concentrating on a Human Biology Distinguished Major and a Bioethics Minor in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia. Kathy graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2006 and was an active member of Assistive Technology, Biology Society, and CORE. She participated in Model UN (United Nations) in middle and high school and was involved in both the Track and Field team and Volleyball team, which she captained her Senior and Junior year, respectively. A National Merit Finalist, Kathy is currently the Milestat Administrator for her former high school and serves as an Operator for Tetrinet2. She also is a Sexual Assault Peer Advocate at UVA. In her free time she enjoys reading, spending time with her friends, playing video games, and sports. This is her second summer as an instructor for Fairfax Collegiate; along with public speaking, she will be teaching Creative Computing, Mobile Robotics, and Computer Skills and Keyboarding.

Katie Barber
Katie Barber is a second year Echols Scholar in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia. She is planning on double majoring in English and Spanish. Katie graduated from West Springfield High School in 2007, where she was captain of the cross country team and president of the National Honor Society. At UVA, Katie is involved in Madison House volunteer programs as an ESL tutor and soccer coach and is a member of the Echols Council and Chi Omega Fraternity. She also works as a clerical assistant at the UVA Eye Clinic and recently participated in an Alternative Spring Break trip to a Jamaican primary school. She is looking forward to her first year working with Fairfax Collegiate.

Tim Carey
Tim Carey is a rising sophomore at Brown University, where he currently plans to major in Architectural Studies and is active in the Orchestra and Wind Symphony. Tim graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2007, where he was involved in various band and orchestra groups and was a National Merit Finalist. During high school, Tim gained teaching experience through tutoring Spanish and volunteering with the How Do You Zoo? Program at the National Zoo. He was also involved with Boy Scouts and became an Eagle Scout during his senior year. In his free time, Tim enjoys art, music and learning foreign languages. This will be his first summer working with Fairfax Collegiate.

Winn Chen
Winn is a rising sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis, where he is majoring in architecture. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2007, where he was a member of the Student Government Association and the track & field team. Aside from tutoring privately, he has tutored at Weyanoke Elementary School in all subjects. This will be his second summer working at Fairfax Collegiate. Outside of work, Winn enjoys art, music, and film.

Scott Kenkeremath
Scott Kenkeremath is a rising fourth year student at the University of Virginia. Before attending the University of Virginia, he was a student at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, graduating in 2005 as a National Merit Scholar. During his time at Jefferson, he acted as a tutor at Belvedere Elementary School, and gained an interest in education. He hopes to attend medical school after completing his undergraduate degree, but he is exploring teaching opportunities as well. He is currently majoring in biology, with a chemistry minor. Scott will be teaching courses in mathematics, robotics, computing, and test preparation. This will be his second summer teaching with Fairfax Collegiate.

Jennifer Kye
Jennifer is an alumna of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and a former National Merit Finalist. Jennifer, a history major and biology minor, will graduate from the University of Virginia in May of 2008. At UVA she has enjoyed volunteering for the Charlottesville Free Clinic and Kluge Children’s Rehabilitation Center while also being involved with crisis support work and mediation services. This will be her second summer with Fairfax Collegiate, where she will teach TJ Exam Prep and Exam Essay Writing.

Casey Little
Casey Little is a rising second-year in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia, where she plans to major in math. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2007. During high school she participated in the class of 2007 student government, was an all-district cheerleader and team captain, and was part of a variety of choral ensembles, including the Virginia All-State Choir. At the university she was vice-president of her first-year dorm, is on the Virginia Competitive Cheerleading squad, and is a member of Zeta Tau Alpha women's fraternity. She is also part of Hoos In Treble, an award-winning, all-female acappella group, where she is the group's incoming social chair for the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters. She has also played in recreational soccer leagues and been a Girl Scout since age 6. During her summers she volunteers as a counselor at Camp Fairfax, a week-long Girl Scout day camp, where she gets the opportunity to interact with and oversee the activities of girls (and some boys) of all ages. This will be Casey's first year teaching courses with Fairfax Collegiate.

Mariah Walker
Mariah Walker is a Sophomore at William and Mary, where she plans to major in English. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in 2007 as a National AP Scholar and recipient of the National Merit of Commendation, where she was involved in the symphonic orchestra, astronomy club, and basketball team. She has experience in T.J. test prep, in group as well as one-on-one settings. In her free time, she enjoys reading, kayaking, and music. Along with teaching T.J. Exam Prep, she will also be teaching some of the computer courses.

Iris Warchall
Iris Warchall is a rising Senior at The College of William and Mary, majoring in Neuroscience. She attended high school locally, graduating in 2006 from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology as a National Merit Finalist. At Thomas Jefferson, Iris was a letter winner on the cross country, and indoor/outdoor track teams, and completed her senior project in the Videotechnology Tech Lab. In Williamsburg, Iris volunteers with Head Start, a program that provides preschool for children from disadvantaged families. In her first summer at Fairfax Collegiate, Iris will be working with the video production, PSAT/SAT prep, and TJ test prep classes. In her free time, Iris enjoys discussing political issues, long-distance running, and music.

Writing

Amelia Chandler-Lewy
Amelia Chandler-Lewy is currently pursuing her Master's of Fine Arts in Poetry at American University. She received her B.A. in English with an emphasis in Poetry from Mills College in Oakland, California,where she served as a Teacher's Assistant for a college level poetry class while at Mills College, where she led in-class exercises, gave personalized feedback, and lectured. She has worked extensively in college writing centers, both in California and at American University, where she helped students with composition and grammar. She has worked as a Mad Scientist in Houston, teaching Science classes for students in grades K-5. Also, she has been a private Bar/ Bat Mitzvah tutor since 1992, helping her Grades 5-7 students to prepare for both the reading and chanting of Hebrew as well as the writing and delivery of speeches. Her favorite writers include Pablo Neruda, Tennessee Williams, and William Wordsworth.

David Garnett
David Garnett is a retired Federal civil servant. Most of his career was in the field of education. As a Peace Corps volunteer, he worked as an English and French teacher in a small town on the Black Sea in Turkey. Then he was an elementary school teacher to Seminole Native American children near Clewiston, Florida, and to the descendents of the famous Sioux chief, Sitting Bull, in Bullhead, South Dakota. Mr. Garnett served many years as an instructional systems specialist providing training and instruction to Marines, officers, and educators at the Marine Corps premier distance education and training organization, the Marine Corps Institute. In his spare time, he privately tutors elementary, middle school and high school students in writing and composition, research project development and writing, and basic math and beginning algebra. He looks forward to working with the Fairfax Collegiate Summer Program for the second summer.

Maggie Greaves
Maggie Greaves is from Atlanta, Georgia. She is a recent graduate of Agnes Scott College with a BA in English literature. She has worked as a tutor in her college writing center for three years, during which time she has also studied and researched topics in writing pedagogy and writing center theory. Next year she will take over the administrative position of writing center coordinator. She plans to pursue a PhD in English literature with a particular focus on the 20th century and modern poetry.

Sara Jameson
Originally from Virginia, Sara Jameson is a rising Senior at Middlebury College in Vermont, pursuing a joint major in English and Music with a minor in French. With an interest in both English and Arts education, Sara has worked as an intern at The Community Music School of the Piedmont, as a research assistant to her French professor at Middlebury, and has been volunteering as an English assistant at a French high school. Sara has also worked as an editor and writer for the Arts section of the Middlebury College newspaper and has been involved in numerous theatrical productions. Sara has been studying abroad in Scotland and France this past year, focusing on British and French literature and music. She enjoys playing the piano, reading, and traveling, and is excited about her first summer teaching with Fairfax Collegiate.

Jennifer Janisch
Jennifer Ann Janisch is a student in George Mason University's Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program. She received her BA in English and Creative Writing from Oswego State University in New York where she served as Editor-in-Chief of The Great Lake Review. At Mason, she is the Editor-in-Chief of The George Mason Review, an undergraduate literary journal, and will be the Nonfiction Editor for So To Speak, a national literary journal, next year. She tutors in the University Writing Center three days a week and is taking a pedogogy class in preparation for the college composition classes she'll teach next semester. After graduate school, she plans to return to New York to pursue a career in academia. Some of her current creative nonfiction writing is published and/or forthcoming in Fringe Magazine and Prick of the Spindle.

Eileen McCaffrey
Eileen McCaffrey is a graduate of Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, where she received a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She plans to teach elementary school upon completion of her graduate studies at Virginia Tech in Curriculum and Instruction. While at Virginia Tech, Eileen has been involved with several community service organizations completing volunteer hours on campus and in the New River Valley community. She has previously been employed by the Fairfax County Park Authority as a naturalist and currently works as a substitute teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools. In her free time, Eileen enjoys reading, writing, and spending time with friends and family. This is her first summer teaching with Fairfax Collegiate.

Jenny Molberg
Originally from Dallas, Texas, Jenny Molberg is a student in the MFA program in Creative Writing at American University. She focuses mainly on poetry and has recently been published in Zone 3 and other literary magazines. In December 2006, she graduated from Louisiana State University with a BA in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. She worked as a tutor in Baton Rouge and is presently a member of the tutoring team at Study Point in Washington, DC, where she tutors high school student in English, Writing and SAT preparation. After completing her MFA, she plans to continue writing and pursue a career in teaching.

Nicola Scott
Nicola Scott earned her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from George Mason University, and her undergraduate degree in English and Creative Writing from George Washington University. She has many years of teaching, tutoring, and editing experience, working with adults and kids of all ages. She currently teaches business writing for George Mason University's School of Management, and also works as a fiction writing mentor for the Writer's Center. Originally from Northern California, she enjoys traveling and reading in her spare time. Her favorite authors are Jeffrey Eugenides and Margaret Atwood.

Teaching Assistants


Courtney Brown
Courtney Brown is a rising Senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. She is a member of Class Council and served as Historian Freshman year. She has been a member of the crew team since Freshmen year and rowed Varsity her Junior year and was part of a Nationals-winning boat her sophomore year. She is an active member of the Black Student Union and is a mentor for the Hispanic Alliance mentoring program which mentors students at a nearby elementary school. Courtney enjoys reading and her favorite books are those in Stephenie Meyers' Twilight series. On the weekends, Courtney likes to spend time with her friends, watch movies, and relax.

Elliott Eggan
Elliott Eggan is an honor student and rising junior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. He has played piano for 11 years and performs in festivals, recitals, and the annual Washington Area Suzuki Piano Institute. During the fall of his sophomore year he participated in the cross-country team, and throughout the year was actively involved in neuroscience society, biotechnology club, and world culture club. At the Frost Middle School GT Center, Elliott was selected as a peer tutor where he helped students working on a variety of different courses. In keeping with Elliott’s interest in biology, he will be attending a Biomedical Science Institute at the University of Maryland this summer.

Josh Holt
Josh Holt is a recent graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. He rowed for the prestigious Thomas Jefferson crew team. He was president of the school bridge club, and he competed in the Youth North American Bridge Championships in Atlanta. He is attending the College of William and Mary, where he plans to study biology.

Lauren Laffossé
Lauren Laffossé, a rising Junior and honor student at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, has tutored elementary math students and enjoys the subject very much. As a Freshman, she participated in high school swim team and track team, going to the Regional Swim and the Regional Track meets in winter and spring. As a middle-schooler, Lauren attended Lake Braddock Secondary School in the GT Center classes and took part in the Junior National Honor Society. She has previously attended Fairfax Collegiate summer classes for many years and enjoys reading. This is her second year assisting with the summer program.

Radhika Patil
Radhika Patil is a rising senior at Langley High School. She is actively involved in the South Asian Students Association, Red Cross Club, Key Club, Multicultural Club, Spanish Club, and Spanish Honors Society. She enjoys dancing and is on the Langley Bhangra team. Radhika has participated in charity dance programs and school performances. In the future, Radhika hopes to work in the World Health Organization in various parts of the world. She enjoys reading, dancing, and spending time with her family and friends.

Patrick Stalcup
Patrick Stalcup is a rising Junior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. He plays Trombone in the Thomas Jefferson Marching Colonials. He is active in the TJ Chimeras, an ultimate frisbee team, and a Systems Administrator Understudy at the Thomas Jefferson Systems Laboratory.

Ryan Stumvoll
Ryan Stumvoll is a rising Senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. He plays varsity Baseball and runs both Cross Country and Indoor Track for the Colonials. He spends his summers swimming and playing tennis for the Vienna Woods Swim Team in addition to playing for several baseball teams. He enjoys working with computers and electronic circuits and spends much of his free time writing fun and useful computer programs.
